Bible Verse: So therefore, any one of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33
Scripture Reading: Luke 14:25-33
In Luke 14 there are three places where Jesus said that unless people meet certain conditions, they could not be his disciples.
- “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple” (v.26).
- “Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” (v.27).
- “So therefore, none of you can become my disciples if you do not give up all your possessions” (v.33).
Although Jesus says elsewhere that his yoke was “easy” and his burden was “light” (Matthew 11:30), there is no doubt that these conditions have seemed hard and heavy to many who read the Gospels. They certainly have been easier to understand than to obey. It is not that the words are complex or concepts too profound, it is just that they cut across everything that we hold most dear.
A supreme loyalty and love for Jesus puts all other relationships into second place; and the willingness to take up our cross, the instrument of our own death, is necessary to follow after Jesus.
Where is Jesus asking for first place today?
