Bible Verse: How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings… (Matthew 23:37)

There’s a well-known expression “getting your ducks in a row” which of course means taking care of all the details for a nice end result.

Often times the end result is due to a whole lot of messy beginnings and middles before getting to the end. Sometimes one wonders whether it is worth the effort and energy that goes into it—especially when it comes to parenting.

When the kids start fighting with you about going to church, when they go out with friends and make huge mistakes. When they repeatedly commit the same infractions and you realize the power of free will is much stronger than the power of parenting.

When you want to throw in the towel and quit, and instead you throw yourself at the Lord’s mercy and beg for wisdom, patience, kindness and tolerance.

Time passes. Before you know it, they’ve grown up and left the nest. Wooed home for the holidays they join you for Sunday morning service. As you look, there they are, like ducks in a row, they are worshippers of God, and you know, it was all worth it.
