Bible Verse: “Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.” (Psalm 150:2)

Scripture Reading: Daniel 6:1-28

What does it mean to be excellent? Webster’s Dictionary describes it as “superior in some quality, skill or achievement; surpassing.”

This is certainly an aspect of God’s Life, for the scriptures say, He has done excellent things (Isaiah 12:5).

I think we can agree that all of the Lord’s ways are surpassing; they are superior in quality and achievement. Excellence is a Godly quality because the Lord only does excellent things. He cannot do anything better than He already has. I believe this is why, when He looked at the world He had just created, He said that it was good. There was nothing more He could have done to make it better. God’s good is excellent.

Excellence is a quality of God – mediocrity is not. If we are going to manifest this aspect of His Life, we must fight mediocrity. We have to reject the attitude that tolerates something that is less than the best. Mediocrity is not attractive. You do not see books for sale in the store entitled, ‘How to Achieve Mediocrity’, or ‘How I Came to be Less than the Best’. These are not best-sellers because no one wants to be just average. Everyone inherently strives for something more. I believe we have this drive within us because we are made in the image of God, and He is excellent in all of His ways. He wants us to strive for the same standard and express excellence in our lives.

Some Christians react to this and while acknowledging that Excellence is a quality of God, they do not believe that we are meant to express it in our lives on earth. They assume it will lead to self-indulgence and extravagance. They ask, “Is it really spiritual to want to achieve and be the best? Did Jesus seek excellence?

The answer is yes! Jesus modelled it for us. If you look at the life of Jesus, He was anything but self-indulgent and extravagant, but He did manifest the quality of excellence.

Excellence is doing everything to the very best of your ability as unto the Lord.

I am calling for all Christians to lift the standard of excellence in every aspect of their lives. When you are doing something, ask yourself, could I do this better? Then strive to do it to the very best of your ability. Why? You are doing it as unto the Lord, as His representative, for His approval in the end.
