Bible Verse: Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:17-19

Scripture Reading: John 21:15-19

Jesus tells Peter that he is blessed when he correctly answers Jesus’ question about who He is. Jesus then gives a brief vision of the substantial impact Peter
will have in the future. (Mt 16:17-19)

Commissioned upon the rock, Peter has a major setback when he denies knowing Jesus three times. However, he is restored after Jesus asks three times, in three different ways, if Peter loves Him. Jesus then re-confirms Peter’s commissioning. (Jn 21:15-19)

Peter finally understood what the heart of God’s blessings are — an inheritance, gift for life. He had failed, but the Lord shone His face upon him, was gracious with him, extended His grace and love, and granted him peace.

Peter now knew he was empowered to make an impact. Scripture records several impactful events led by Peter, and history also records the impact he had in the world. Later in life, Peter acknowledged the Lord’s blessing and divine power (2 Pet 1:3-4).

Peter also wrote earlier about a blessing inheritance (1 Pet 3:8-14) — that whatever comes our way is a blessing no matter what it is, even suffering. (v.14) By receiving it as a blessing, we inherit a blessing for ourselves. This goes back to God’s promise to Abram: blessings will flow through us, and we are to be a blessing to others.

Many of us are like Peter. We have failed and will probably fail again. But we have a spiritual inheritance available to all who profess Jesus as their Saviour. Praise the Lord! Know that you are blessed, and this will empower you to make an impact.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn His face towards you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
