Love is in the Details

Theme of the Week: Seven Sayings from the Cross

Saying 3: “Woman, behold your son” John 19:26

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:17

Even as he hung on the cross, Jesus stayed on mission.

Tortured but alive, He looked to see his mother standing near John and declared, “Woman, behold your son.” And to John, “Behold, your mother.”

While He is fully the Son of God, Jesus is also still fully human, and wholly entered into the human experience. That meant making sure His mother was taken care of after He returned to Heaven.

How often do we look at the small details of life and sigh or complain?

We would rather avoid the difficult and painful conversations we need to have with our family members. Maybe it’s time to ask a loved one to give up their driver’s license or sell the house and move into a smaller place as age catches up with them. Or we need to set up grandma in a personal care home.

These are seemingly mundane moments in life, yet entrusting His mother into John’s care was one of the seven sayings Christ made on the cross. Here he was fulfilling the law required of the firstborn son – to take care of his parents.

As Jesus said in Matthew, “Do not think I came to destroy the Law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17)

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with your family duties? Like these small details are just uncomfortable chores? They are important to Jesus and acts of love and service.

Next time one of these tasks comes across your desk, see it as an opportunity to perform an act of love, one that Christ certainly honors and appreciates, because He’s been there too.
