Theme of the Week: Anger into Mercy
Bible Verse: “Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths.” Psalm 25:4
Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:66-77
We started our journey this week, acknowledging that anger is not a problem to solve. God designed us in His image, and anger is a God-given capacity to respond to a wrong we believe is important.
As we recap this week, I’d like to give you some final words of encouragement:
Venting? Calming? Or God’s Way? As the old song goes – “I did it my way” – God reminds us that His ways are higher than ours. If you feel inclined to act in a certain way, remember, God’s ways are best for you.
Isaiah 55:8 – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.”
Anger is not a victim but a perpetrator. Anger is complex to define, but it certainly is more than a feeling. It is definitely an action. In Christ, we are free to choose to act according to our flesh or to the Spirit of God.
Galatians 5:13 – “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
God’s Anger is Redemptive. God’s way is opposite to our natural ways. Because of that, if anger is the capacity to respond to a wrong we believe is important to us, the response makes all the difference. It can be redemptive or destructive.
1 Peter 3:9 – “Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.”
A Mirror on Your Anger. Dealing with anger is not a one-time thing, but a lifelong reliance on Jesus’ grace and mercy, as we fix our eyes on Him.
Hebrews 12:2 – “Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.”
Your relationship with God will always lead you to your relationship with people. Your willingness to be mastered by Jesus and to make following him your first priority will allow you to imitate him in expressing your anger in a redemptive way.
