Seeking First the Kingdom In My Work

In Daily Devotional, Life Issues, Work by Kirk Giles

Theme of the Week: Seeking First the Kingdom

Bible Verse: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24

Scripture Reading: Daniel 5:13-17 & Daniel 6:1-5

This week, we are exploring what it looks like to be men who take Jesus’ command and promise in Matthew 6:33 seriously. We want to understand what it means to seek first God’s Kingdom while trusting God to provide for our needs.

It is safe to say that for most of us, COVID-19 has changed our work. Depending on your career, you may find yourself laid off, working from home, or busier than you have ever been. Your current circumstances may have changed, but the call to work has not.

In the book of Daniel, we discover a man who has been living in exile from his home for several decades. Through a whole series of circumstances in the first four chapters, Daniel finds himself working for King Belshazzar in chapter five. When Babylon comes under siege and is in crisis, it is Daniel who is called before the king to help deal with what is happening.

In Daniel chapter six, he has become the third ruler in the Kingdom. Others become jealous of his influence and want to set a trap for him. His work environment was consistently difficult and challenging.

In both chapter five and chapter six, Daniel is described as a worker who has the best character and integrity. Daniel 5:14 says, “Light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.” Daniel 6:4 says, “They could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.”

To seek first the Kingdom of God in our work is to remember that we do not work for our paycheque or for our employer – we work for God. The command in Colossians 3 is to work with all our heart for God in whatever we are doing.

Whatever your work circumstances are today – be a faithful man of integrity and high character who works to honour God. Take time to pray and ask God what this looks like in your current circumstances.
