Speak Her Love Language

In Daily Devotional by Neil Josephson

Theme of the Week: Bless Your Wife

Bible Verse: “Let us not love simply with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Over the years I have spoken to more than one frustrated guy who was doing his best to make his wife feel loved but feels like he is failing. There are cases, most often when there has been abuse, where it becomes very, very difficult for a woman to trust and to love freely and in these cases, I strongly encourage the involvement of a wise and trained professional.

But for many of us, the much more common issue is that although we are doing our best, we are speaking the wrong language.

I remember one couple clearly. They came to us with so many years of hurt, which had grown into anger and aged into bitterness, that they could not find a way back. Her love language was acts of service. That’s how she felt love and so that’s what she gave her husband. She wore herself out doing things for him and for the family and she was brokenhearted that he didn’t seem to appreciate it nor did he do much for her. She didn’t feel loved.

His love language was physical touch and he felt hurt and rejected when she chose to busy herself with things around the home instead of just cuddling with him. He felt unloved and brokenhearted in his own way. Ultimately, they divorced, convinced the other did not love them anymore.

How I wish they had read and applied the truth of Gary Chapman’s book, The 5 Love Languages. If you know the concept, bless your wife by doing all you can to become fluent – PhD fluent – in her love language.

If you don’t know your spouse’s love language – or yours – go online and take the short inventory, get the book, do the homework and apply what you learn.

I guarantee you, she will grow in her sense of being loved and in her capacity to be loving. In blessing her, you will both be blessed.
