Theme of the Week: Encouragement Changes Lives
Bible Verse: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4
Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:1-11
It takes only one person to crash or lift a plane. It takes only one spouse to destroy a marriage. By your spirit or attitude you can weaken or lift your family, undermine or strengthen your workplace. Think of inspirational athletes such as Tom Brady in football, or Wayne Gretzky in hockey, who inspired their teams by their attitude and example. These men would not let their teams fail.
Think of the power of your own life and example. Dedicate your life to honouring God and helping anyone you meet to develop to their fullest potential. The result will be extraordinary influence in the greatest possible way, from the barber shop to the coffee shop. Like an eagle, you can develop a wider perspective instead of a narrow vision. When you are willing to soar with God in your spiritual life, you will be able to see needs of the wider world and needs of the whole person, because you will see others as God sees them. This is the perspective of Jesus.
An intentional encourager sees a person for whom he or she can become. If I want to become such an encourager, I will seek to treat you as if you are more valuable than I am. This means that I want to help you experience God’s very best. In such a mindset, there is no room for selfishness, jealousy or envy. As an intentional encourager, you are more secure in who you are because you belong to God and serve Him with an unchanging purpose. The consequence is a person who delights to lift up all those she meets. It is being others-centered.
In your home, group of friends, or workplace, you can build a context of caring for someone whenever they need it. The intention is then to encourage that person to ‘be there’ for someone else just in time. Some automakers avoid costly inventories and maintain an efficient flow of vehicles by arranging for auto parts to arrive just in time for the need on the assembly line. By developing a sensitive mindset, a constant awareness of others in need, and a caring compassionate heart, you can change a family, a community, and even deeply impact the world by offering loving help to a friend, stranger, or a critic ‘just in time.’
