Theme of the Week: Seeking First the Kingdom

We finished the devotions last week with a call to focus on our obedience more than our survival during this pandemic. This week, we took time to explore how we can be men who seek first the kingdom of God as Jesus calls us to in Matthew 6:33.

With My Family… God gives us the calling of building families who have one purpose in mind – to love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your might. God’s desire is that seeking first the kingdom of God as a family becomes a normal part of the rhythm of our lives.

“You shall teach them (God’s command to love) diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” Deuteronomy 6:7

In My Work… To seek first the kingdom of God in our work is to remember that we do not work for our paycheque or for our employer – we work for God. Whatever your work circumstances are today – be a faithful man of integrity and high character who works to honour God.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24

Love Other Christians… One of the things that matters to Jesus is for other people to know we are his disciples. His plan for people to know this reality is simply this: for us to love one another as Christians. In the kingdom of God, there is no space for individualism.

“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” 1 John 3:16

Loving the Vulnerable… One of the distinguishing features of people who are seeking first the kingdom of God is that they are committed to helping the most vulnerable people. Jesus feels so strongly about this that He views our love for the most vulnerable as the same as loving Him.

“Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40

When you wake up each day, what is the primary pursuit of your life? My prayer is that we discover the joy and purpose that comes from being men who seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
