Work the Land; Trust God

Theme of the Week: Listening With Jesus

Bible Verse: “Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Matthew 6:27

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-34

Spring is a great time of year. For farmers all over the world, Spring is the beginning of a new season. Their equipment is ready to go, the land gets cultivated, seed goes in the ground, and on they go to other jobs that require their attention. They wait, not worrying. A farmer relies on nature to take its course. Do they stress about disease outbreak, too much rain, too little rain, an early frost, or extreme heat? No. They wait. Farmers must learn to trust.

I often think about the saying, “Whatever you plant in faith, don’t dig up in doubt.” This is such a good reminder. If a farmer walked into the field and unearthed the seed with his or her boot to check if the crop was growing, would that be ridiculous? The same is true for our lives. When you plant seeds deep in your soul, the roots will get into the rich, fertilized soil—and the result will produce plenty of healthy fruit. If we just scratch the top layer of soil to plant the seeds, they are not going to get into the ground and soak up the nutrients they need to grow.

This is similar to setting aside time with God and allowing spiritual development in our lives. When we cast our cares upon the Lord, we must believe that He hears our prayers. Then we must trust God to work things out for our best interest.

God wants to partner with us to produce bumper crops in our lives that far exceed anything we’ve ever anticipated. If it was easy, they wouldn’t call it “working” the land! Plant your dreams, your goals, then let them grow and put away your shovel!
