Bible Verse: This is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN “Here is what these words mean: Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. Daniel 5:25-27

Scripture Reading: Daniel 5:1-30

It was a wild party! More than a thousand guests arrived on the red carpet, making their grand entrance. This was an invitation-only party of the best and the brightest of the greatest city in the ancient world. Long before there was the Academy Awards, there was King Belshazzar’s exquisite affair as described in Daniel 5. In his massive banquet hall the food and drink flowed freely.

Then the tipsy king made an announcement, bring the stolen Hebrew wine goblets from King Solomon’s temple into the party. No one even considered if perhaps this was blasphemy. The waiters and waitresses filled these new goblets from the holy temple and the party continued. The king and his entourage made their way to the front of the enormous hall where they praised the idols of gold and silver. They offered a toast to the Babylonian god, Marduk.

Suddenly a disembodied hand appeared on the wall. The crowd went silent as they witnessed the words “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin” written on the banquet wall.

Mene: meaning your days are numbered. The king had thought he was invincible but that night his life would end.

Tekel: meaning your life is being weighed. King Belshazzar had stepped on the scales of God’s justice and had been found wanting.

The English expression, “writing on the wall,” comes from this biblical narrative. What’s your writing on the wall today? What is God calling you to repent and turn from?

God may not send a disembodied hand to get our attention; but he does send people, a sermon, a conversation, a child’s look, a sunset, an unsettling in our hearts, a near accident, a doctor’s warning, an overindulgence that makes you sick, health challenges or a lack of peace. In a thousand different ways, God will use whatever means He can to get our attention. Will you pay attention to the writing on your wall?
